First off, it was wrong and there’s no way around that. I don’t think Cooper’s comments should be taken lightly and I don’t condone what he said. It’s an unfortunate way for a national football player to end his career but Cooper has probably done just that. In fact,
with Jeremy Maclin down for the season, Cooper had a chance to make himself known, with his play and not his words. I really believe what the Eagles are trying to do for Riley is nice and generous but I believe his road has already been decided. That being said, I want to point out some players whose actions that were deemed wrong, but they were never punished.
“Thoroughly confused. Zimmerman doesn’t last a year before the hood catches up to him.”- Victor Cruz’s thoughts on twitter after the Zimmerman trial
“All them jurors should go home tonight and kill themselves for letting a grown man get away with killing a kid”- Roddy White’s thoughts on twitter after Zimmerman trial
“@Angelface0330 I never look or speak to u .. Once u lied bout birth control ya life was created … B 4 that u was a nobody dirty alley grl”- LeSean McCoy comments on twitter about his child’s mother.
“He calls me, there was a guy working in a ditch, one of those coon-ass guys, that talk funny. I can’t talk like them, but he (the LSU trustee) can, most people in Louisiana can, and he (guy in ditch) says, (Saban imitating cajun accent) ‘Hey, you see that Coach Saban signed up with Alabama?’ … however they talk … (returns to cajun accent) ‘that son of a b—-, i feel like he’s (expletive) my wife.”- Nick Saban’s comments towards a fan.
Nothing really happened to these individuals. Sure, people retweeted their tweets and argued with them. Sure, their tweets made national television and newspapers. However, neither the NFL or their teams, punished any of these players. Teams didn’t try to force/offer help for their insensitive comments that everyone across the world could see.
It was simply let go. Of course, each player apologized but that brings me back to Cooper. If Roddy White can tell people to kill themselves and all he had to was apologize, why can’t Cooper do the same thing?
I think Victor Cruz summed it up perfectly. “It was wrong,” Cruz said. “I’m human and things happen and I own up to it.” What more can Cooper do?
